Daddy's Hands, so soft and gentle... protecting from all harm.
|My father after a very dusty 4-wheeling trip|
My father worked a lot as I was growing up, but I will never forget certain things of my childhood memories with my Daddy. Every year at Valentines Day we'd have the "Stepping Stones" banquet and my father along with all the other girls fathers would sing, We Have This Moment Today. My father with his off key deep, soft voice would do his best and it meant so much to hear him try for his little girl (girls since it was for me & my sister). "Stepping Stones" was a group put together by two women in the church I grew up in that taught young girls to be ladies, virtuous women, and well mannered little girls. The lyrics for the song our fathers sang are below and you can see why it is such a special song.
My Father, has so many stories to tell and so many words of wisdom to listen to - but the best part of my father is his hands. A little dirt from hard work, a lot of wrinkles from years of worry, and connected to his arms just waiting to wrap me up in a hug. When you look at a my fathers hands you can almost read the love, work, and play of his past. Countless times he'd reach his finger to his lips and motion to "hush" as we were hiking in the woods because he saw a deer, fox, moose, or coyote or other wildlife animal, just because he wanted to give me the chance to see it. My father is a mountain goat and hikes rather fast, so a little girl, with little legs trying to keep up chances are I'd be making tons of noise just trying to be quiet.
More than once (maybe twice, ha ha ha) he'd come home from a long day at work to find I hadn't behaved and use his hand to swat me on the bum... explain why I'd been disciplined (usually for smart mouthing my mother, go figure), and then hold me as I cried. A father is someone you respect, adore, and revere. A Daddy is someone who no matter what, you know he is more - he is your friend. My Daddy was all of these things to me as a child, and is even more as an adult. All fathers should take a lesson from a father with 6 children who loves them more than anything in the world. He worked so much to simply provide for us and our dreams. We didn't have much, but we were a happy family, guided by the leader of the house. Every little girl should have a father like mine. We Have This Moment Today, so cherish every minute with your little girl, because she needs her father to be a Daddy.
We Have this Moment, Today - Written by Bill Gather
Hold tight to the sound of the music of living, Happy songs from the laughter of children at play; Hold my hand as we run through the sweet fragrant meadows, Making mem'ries of what was today.
Chorus: We have this moment to hold in our hands and to touch as it slips through our fingers like sand; Yesterday's gone and tomorrow may never come, But we have this moment today.
Tiny voice that I hear is my little girl calling, For Daddy to hear just what she has to say; And my little son running there by the hillside, May never be quite like today.
Tender words, gentle touch and a good cup of coffee, And someone who loves me and wants me to stay; Hold them near while they're here and don't wait for tomorrow, To look back and wish for today.
Take the blue of the sky and the green of the forest, And the gold and the brown of the freshly mown hay; Add the pale shades of spring and the circus of autumn, And weave you a lovely today.
